2010 FALL/WINTER ACTIVE MISSISSAUGA GUIDE NOW AVAILABLE:
  The Fall/Winter Active Mississauga Guide produced by Recreation  and Parks Services is now available online, and in hard copy in all community centres (e.g. Cawthra CC) and libraries (e.g. Cooksville branch).  Lists programs and activities for all ages.  Online Registration begins on Sat. August 14 and in-person Registration on Sat. August 21
 
HISTORIC WALKING TOUR OF PORT CREDIT:  Museums of Mississauga is offering a walking tour on Sat. July 31 @ 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. in honour of PC175.  These popular tours are being held on the last Saturday of each month until October and have been very well attended.  Meet in front of the 'IMPRESSIONABLE GIFTS' store at 74 Lakeshore Road East.  Length: 1 ¼ hours or more depending on what the attendees wish.  Dress for the weather!  FREE EVENT.  PC175 Calendar.

'BRIARWOOD' SITE DEVELOPMENT:  The Committee of Adjustment will consider requests for variances (click to view the Notice of Public Hearing) regarding Phase 2 of this site development on Thurs. August 12 @ 1:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber.  Click for further info, picture and ongoing updates about the Briarwood site development.


PORT CREDIT YOUTH DROP-IN:
 
On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. at CLARKE HALL (map).  Free video games, foosball, board games, crafts and more!  Ages 10-14.  And ....

PORT CREDIT YOUTH 'REC & ROLL' DROP-IN:  On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at PORT CREDIT MEMORIAL PARK (map).  Ages 10-14 (some flexibility with younger ages).  Each Wednesday, youth are invited to swim at Cawthra Pool -- bus transportation will be provided free of charge.  For those who do not attend trips days (e.g. Blue Jays game, Bowling, Playdium) or swimming days, normal drop-in activities (drama, waterfront, karaoke, scavenger hunts, etc.) will still occur in the Park (under the Gazebo in hot weather).  Trip information, including costs, will be provided to the youth approx. one week prior to the scheduled dates.  Run by Bryan, Tryston and Danielle with the City Parks and Rec Dept.  See City Youth Programs webpage.  Port Credit/Clarkson Drop-In hotline: (905) 615-4840.

POOL CLOSURES:  All but one of the City's outdoor pools are closed this summer for renovations made possible by the Infrastructure Stimulus Funding (ISF) program with the provincial and federal governments.  This has attracted media coverage and resident complaints especially during the heatwave!  Good news for PC is that nearby Westacres outdoor pool is open, with extended hours to 9:30 p.m.  There are also 18 spashpads open (including the newly-upgraded one at Jack Darling Park) and 11 indoor pools that are open.  Click here for another listing of Splashpads See Mississauga News article (July 6, 2010): Pool closures have us steaming.

MY MISSISSAUGA SUMMER EVENTS AT CITY CENTRE:  July - September 2010.  The City of Mississauga is sponsoring a huge variety of FREE cultural events, concerts and community festivals at the City Centre all summer long.  Because of the renovation of the Civic Square, events will be held on the lawn at the LIVING ARTS CENTRE (map).  Bring your own lawn chair or blanket.  Click here for a complete online schedule and further information.
 

ROTARY OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHTS:  Remaining dates: Fridays: August 6, 13, and 27 @ 8:15 p.m. (Dusk).  ADULT-ORIENTED MOVIE: Saturday, July 31 (at dusk) will feature Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

ON THE VERANDA:
  Summer Concert Series, Friday evenings at 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. during the months of July and August.  BENARES HISTORIC HOUSE at 1507 Clarkson Road North (map).  Hosted by: Friends of the Museums of Mississauga.  ADMISSION is Pay-What-You-Can.  Complete schedule and performers.


FARMERS MARKET:  Saturdays @ 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. until mid-October at the Elmwood Avenue Parking Lot (beside the LCBO).  Returning and brand new vendors.  Watch for the tomato-red painted bike which has been installed permanently at the site as part of the PC175 celebrations by TOPCA (see more below).  RAIN OR SHINE.  Market sponsored by the BIA:  www.portcredit.com.
 
STARGAZING:  Saturday nights after dark during the months of July and August.  Meet at J.C. SADDINGTON PARK (map).  Presented by: Stargazers' Group of Mississauga.  The Stargazers' Group have been stargazing at Saddington Park and showing the skies to members of the public through their telescopes for the past few years, especially on Saturday nights.  Saddington Park is one of the best stargazing spots in the entire GTA because of its low lighting and position on the lake.   Sometimes they do 'sidewalk astronomy' in other locations!  Click here for website (for viewing times and planned dates for clear nights).
 
SUNSET CONCERT SERIES:   Sunday nights @ 6:30 p.m. during the months of July and August.  PORT CREDIT MEMORIAL PARK (map).  Sponsored by: Mississauga Culture Division Live music by the Credit River until Sunset.  July 11, 18, 25 and August 8, 15, 29.  NOTE: Aug. 20-22 is the Busker Fest weekend and no concert will be held.  At the Gazebo.  FREE EVENT.  All you need is your lawnchairs!  For performers: Click here for Flyer. MUSEUM EXHIBIT:  175 Years of Port Credit History".  July 3 - December 29, 2010.  BRADLEY MUSEUM (The Anchorage), 1620 Orr Road (map).  HOURS: M-F from 9am-5pm and Sat-Sun from 1-5pm The Museums of Mississauga are celebrating 175 years of history in Port Credit with a display highlighting artifacts from their collection including a model of Port Credit from the 1930's.  Also featured will be items from St. Lawrence Starch Works and various items belonging to past residents including the Maybee, Gray and Naish families.  FREE ADMISSION.  Click here for POSTER.  Further details at: Museums of Mississauga.

GREAT ONTARIO SALMON DERBY:  Sat. July 10 - Sat. August 28 Port Credit Weigh Station: Marina Park boat launch, Front St. S. (map) by our unique full fish-cleaning station.  With its world renowned fishery, Port Credit Harbour and its charter fishing fleet (largest on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario) is official home to the Derby, which is the largest fresh-water fishing derby in the world!  Click here for Salmon Derby website.

BUSKER FEST 5:  August 20-22.  Along the Mainstreet of Port Credit -- Lakeshore Road (map).  Presented by: Port Credit BIAClick here for the Busker Fest website (show times, locations, performers).  With over 40 professional Buskers, 6 staging areas, 2 spectacular fire shows and lots of "surprise fly pitches" throughout Port Credit -- with the hugest Grandest Finale in Port Credit Memorial Park (map) on Sunday with every Busker performing to support local charities.

PORT CREDIT IN-WATER BOAT SHOW:  August 27-29.  Port Credit Harbour Marina, 1 Port Street East (map).  Click here for the Boat Show website.  20th year!  The only in-water show on Lake Ontario that has used and new boats, both power and sail.  Explore over 100 boats both sail and power, new and used.  Browse the land displays, listen to the jazz band and live entertainment.  Drop in on the speakers at the Speakers Tent.  Enjoy being with boats and boaters!

GRANGESTOCK:  Saturday, August 28 @ 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.   Heritage Mississauga’s 2nd Annual Music and Art Festival.  FREE ADMISSION.  LOCATION: The grounds of the historic Robinson-Adamson House, “The Grange”, in the heart of Mississauga at 1921 Dundas St. West (click for map) one block west of Mississauga Road.   Click here for information and Poster.  Grangestock will feature the old time rock and blues of the Jerry Stiff Band as well as multimedia artists who will be demonstrating and selling their works in the vendors village.  Ice-cold beer supplied by Port Credit's Old Credit Brewery.  All proceeds from refreshment sales (incl. SOUTHSIDE SHUFFLE BLUES & JAZZ FESTIVAL:  September 10-12.  MAIN STAGE: Port Credit Memorial Park; Street Shuffle on Lakeshore Rd. (map).  Click here for the Southside Shuffle website.  This is the 12th annual event, with Canadian and international acts.  Entertainment on the Main Stage, and in local bars and restaurants.  The Street Shuffle takes place on Saturday from 2-6 p.m., with Lakeshore Road closed off to traffic.

DOORS OPEN MISSISSAUGA:  Saturday, September 18 @ 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  This year's Doors Open event focuses on the city's west end.  Participating sites are located in (west) Port Credit, Clarkson, Erindale, Streetsville, Meadowvale and even newly annexed land from Milton.  In 2002, the Ontario Heritage Trust launched Doors Open Ontario, the first province-wide event of its kind in Canada.  This event provides a behind-the-scenes look at the city's commercial buildings, places of worship, civic buildings, gardens and heritage sites. TOUR DE MISSISSAUGA:  Sunday, September 19 @ 9:00 a.m.  Online registration is open now, including an online waiver.  Last year's Tour started in Port Credit and toured the SW quadrant of the City.  This year's TdeM starts at Vic Johnston Arena in Streetsville.  The three routes (25k, 60k and 100k) will focus on the NW quadrant of the City and tour Old Meadowvale Village, Streetsville, Lisgar and natural areas including the Credit River (Culham Trail).  THIS IS NOT A RACE!  Family-oriented event for riders of all ages and abilities.  FREE Registration and BBQ at the finish.  For details and to register, go to: http://www.mississaugacycling.ca/tour/
